CAGED BIRD - CHEN GUANGCHENG
Caged Bird - Chen (2011) 3 mins
Director and drawing - TRISH MCADAM
charcoal animation and After Effects - 2mins
Commissioned by Front Line Defenders to raise awareness about the plight of the blind, lawyer and Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng and launched on You Tube in December 2011
Chen escaped in April 2012, while guards thought he was sleeping. He broke his foot climbing over the wall surrounding his home, stumbled through the forest and met up with a fellow activist on a nearby road. She drove him to Beijing, his minders in hot pursuit, but he found sanctuary at the US embassy. After days of high-stakes negotiations between American diplomats (including the secretary of state, Hillary Clinton) and China's foreign ministry, the Chinese government granted Chen a passport.
Caged Bird - Chen was nominated for the Irish Council of Civil Liberties Film Award 2012 and screened in the Lighthouse Cinema.
